Fontana, the Taj Palace hotel’s coffee shop, has an array of frosted lamp shades on its celing lit by filament bulbs. Harish Hande looks at the ceiling with irritation. He’s just been declared ‘social entrepreneur of the year’ by the Schwab Foundation for spreading solar energy to villages in India. His company, Selco Solar Light Pvt Ltd, is worth some $ 4 million. “Why produce filament lamps? Why produce cars for one lakh? You have to be serious when you talk about climate change. If one of the most respected groups in the country does not get it how will anyone else?” he frets.

An entrepreneur's crusade in lighting up India's villages

New Delhi: Read this! In a country where we spend thousands of watts of electricity for a day and night cricket match, use the power-greedy heater to ward off the winter chill, there lies another India where villages are dimly lit by paraffin lamps and dim lights battling darkening chimneys. For this cash-strapped India an ignited filament powered by current is a rare luxury, for they cannot even afford electricity.

An Entrepreneur Speaks

You are not likely to find many IITians, armed with a PhD degree from US, commenting, “IIT Kharagpur motto says—In Service of the nation. But which nation it is—USA or some IT and Finance companies.” Equally unlikely is to find a Schwab Social Entrepreneur denying its concept altogether,“Once you put a term like Social Entrepreneur, people consider you an NGO, a grant based body. I am in this business since 1994. I have never taken grants.”
