Building a Sustainable, Energy Secure Future for India

The Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation has partnered with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) on a project to create momentum toward a new energy trajectory in India that enhances energy security and addresses climate change. TERI is seeking to lay the groundwork for an inclusive, informed, secure, and sustainable energy policy for India. Based upon the premise that ‘energy security’ in an Indian context means a lot more than just security of supplies, this project looks to define the term more broadly and in doing so arrive at a shared understanding of the goals that must be met when framing policy. The project, from the outset, is stakeholder-centric and seeks to reach its conclusions after a broad-based collaboration with experts and policymakers in different fields. Modern multi-attribute decision analysis techniques will be used in order to accommodate the varying criteria on which energy policy is judged.

The project team will be aided by a core group of experts and stakeholders, and will be chosen to represent different aspects of energy policy making. Over the course of the project, TERI intends to develop an energy trade module and an emissions module to complement its existing MARKAL (Market Allocation) model of the Indian energy system. In addition, research outputs from a qualitative analysis of issues such as the geopolitics of energy, will be made available to participating stakeholders and experts.
